Two of E. A. Poe’s short stories and the character of Marquise de Sade inspired Jan Švankmajer in his brand new film full of artistically provocative scenes. A young Jean Berlot (P. Liška) meets Marquise (J. Tříska), who believes that they are soul mates, because they had both lost their much-loved and adored mothers. The god-fearing Berlot is horrified by the strange rituals performed at the Marquise‘s house. The Marquise then sends him to a mental asylum run by Dr. Murllopeus (J. Dušek). The staff in the asylum are acting rather weird...
