Eyüp and Hacer, together with their son Ismail, live in a simple flat near the Bosphorus. Albeit slow and uneventful, their everyday life carries the scent of a long-forgotten family tragedy. Another tragedy develops when one rainy night on an empty road, Eyüp’s boss, Servet, hits someone with his car. In order to avoid a scandal, Servet, a local politician and businessman, offers a large sum of money to Eyüp if he confesses to the crime. With Eyüp in prison, Servet becomes ever more possessive of Eyüp’s wife, Hacer. This moving story about life in today’s Turkey, directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, was nominated for the Palme d’Or and won the Best Director prize at the Cannes Festival in 2008.
