The non-European country selected for this year’s focus is Israel, a slightly mysterious place so similar and yet so different from Europe. We hear about it almost daily in the news, but very few can claim they actually understand what is really going on. In the past few years, Israeli short films have been reaping awards at world film festivals, including at the most prestigious. So maybe it is time to take a closer look at the complicated and, for Europeans, hard to grasp reality of the Jewish state and its citizens through the eyes of five very different films, the most successful ones in recent years. A sixth film, the newest, The Guided Tour will be competing for this year’s award.
