(Men of the City), Marc Isaacs / GB, 2009
English version / Czech subtitles, 58 min
In his latest film, the renowned British documentary-maker Marc Isaacs chronicles the fate of several Londoners from various social classes during the current economic crisis. We gradually get to know a rich trader who loses his family due to his constant but compulsive monitoring of events on financial markets, as well as a spiritually oriented street sweeper seeking peace in his soul through Tibetan missions. The greatest wish of a Bangladeshi immigrant looking after an adolescent daughter is to find a different job, while an apparently well-balanced, cigar-loving insurance agent desperately longs to escape his daily grind. A somewhat aggressive metals trader perhaps finds this escape by shooting wild animals at the weekends. Using footage from the eternally rain-sodden British capital, as well as impressive music that is occasionally serious and at other times dramatic and capricious, Isaacs fluidly balances sensitive portraits of people striving to find their place in the swarming city of London.
