Film documentation of a famous collection does not relate to its origin, but describes life of male and female artists, interviews scholars of fine arts and psychiatrists, so that the art of mentally ill people, “madmen”, was perceived without prejudice. Expressing it the same way like artists, such as the expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner who was treated at the psychiatric clinic during the Great War: “I drew a lot of inspiration from the pictures of the patients.”
