A young and pregnant newlywed is distressed by her unpleasant neighbors. She feels as if she were made pregnant by the devil. Everything seems to be caused by an extreme mental disorder (the film may be seen as a metaphor of an immature woman in labour). American press adored this psycho-horror and compared Polanski with Hitchcock.
