Sonbol Fatima ist anders. Nicht nur, dass sie eine eigene Zahnarztpraxis besitzt, sie ist dazu noch mit 35 Jahren Single und fährt nebenbei Autoraylles. Dass dies als Frau in der heiligen Stadt Mashad in der Islamischen Republik Iran ganz und gar nicht normal ist, merkt sie jeden Tag. Ihr Leben ist ein ständiger Kampf um ihre Selbstständigkeit und Freiheit: Nicht nur gegen die Pläne ihrer Mutter sie zu verheiraten und gegen die Sportfunktionäre, die Frauen das Rallyefahren verbieten wollen, aber auch gegen ihre Selbstzweifel.

Niko Apels Dokumentarfilm bietet ein beeindruckendes Porträt einer ungewöhnlichen und doch wiederum ganz normalen Frau und zugleich einen Einblick in eine von Widersprüchen gezeichnete Gesellschaft des Iran der Gegenwart.

Sonbol entstand als Abschlussarbeit an der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg und erhielt 2008 den wichtigsten Nachwuchspreis der deutschen Filmszene, den „First Step Award“ in der Kategorie „Dokumentarfilm“.

Sonbol Fatima is different. At 35 years of age she lives alone and runs her own dental practice. On top of this, she is also a motor-rally driver. This is not normal or easy for a woman in the holy city and pilgrimage centre of Mashhad in the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Sonbol is made acutely aware of this every single day. Her life is a constant struggle for freedom and independence. She not only has to battle against her mother’s plans to marry her off and against sports officials who want to ban women from racing in rallies, but she also has to overcome her own doubts.

Niko Apel’s documentary offers an impressive portrait of an unusual and at the same time completely normal woman. It also provides an insight into contemporary Iranian society, which is full of many contradictions.

“Sonbol” was made as a graduation film at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and it won Niko Apel a “First Steps” award for a documentary film in 2008. This is the most important German prize available to young filmmakers.
