Of Parents And Children

(O rodičích a dětech), Vladimír Michálek / CZ, 2008
czech version, 110 min

A forty-twoyear old son and his seventy-one-year old father practise regular walks through Bubeneč during which they succumb to jovial stories, causal talk but often also to inevitable arguments. Both are, however, fully aware of the passing nature of their extraordinary intimity … A novel by Emil Hakl Of Parents and Children, awarded the Magnesia Litera Prize, has been a significant challenge to Michálek, as transposing a book based on dialogue into a film version is by far not easy. He has, however, faced the novel with the mastery of a skilled director, creating a brittle, humorous film full of empathy.
