(Bunt. Delo Litvinenko), Andrei Nekrasov / RUS, 2007
original version / Czech subtitles, 116 min
Pictures of a dying Alexander Litvinenko flew round the world. A former agent of the Russian FSB secret service notoriously poisoned with radioactive polonium in London, Litvinenko was inconvenient to a lot of people. He knew too much and was not afraid to speak up, paying for his conviction with his life. The journalist and director Andrei Nekrasov met Litvinenko for the first time in London in 2002. In a thorough interview, the former agent told him about the methods of both the FSB (the successor to the KGB) and the whole Russian state apparatus. Litvinenko spoke about the Chechen war, massacres in Moscow, state controlled corruption, court rulings to order, control of the media, the liquidation of opponents of the regime and the mafia's connections with Russian politicians and many other things. However, Rebellion, the Litvinenko Case is more than just a fascinating portrait. Nekrasov has gathered a lot of evidence and interviews with witnesses, including the journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was later killed because of her critical articles about the Chechen war. It amounts to a riveting and brave mosaic about the reality of Putin's Russia today.
