Aki Kaurismäki is undoubtedly the best know Finnish filmmaker and an icon of independent film. His unique style and poetic form, as they are, made a class of itself. Since the early 1980s this self-taught director has shot 16 feature films, which he invariably complements with something between a short film and music video for the Leningrad Cowboys, in which melancholy, strangeness of his heroes and the irony of his sophisticated minimalism from time to time reach futuristic proportions.
