Other Worlds

(Iné svety), Marko Škop / SR - ČR, 2006
Slovak version / English subtitles, 75 min

The Šariš region lies in the eastern Carpathians, a place where the modern West and the more traditional East come into direct contact with each other. It is a point of intersection for different nationalities and religions. At Šariš Castle representatives of this region's chequered society meet. Their ranks include Slovaks, Ruthenians, Jews and Roma. There are also members of the younger generation, who already incline towards an identity that has primarily been established by pop culture and the economic and political direction in which the state is headed. The film captures a rich mixture of individual worlds, various lifestyles, and changeable customs and occupations. This entertaining, stylish and original documentary is composed of many dialogues and inputs into the private world and deliberate conflicts of selected individuals, which give rise to an interesting web of real personal stories. It is not only a reflection on many topical themes surrounding the issue of one's own identity, but also an authentic multi-faceted portrait. This impressive film won the Audience Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
