Summer in Berlin

Summer in Berlin

(Sommer vorm Balkon), Andreas Dresen / NĚM, 2005
German version / English subtitles, 110 min

Katrin and Nike live in the same house and are best friends. Nike is younger, blonder and more conventionally attractive. She works as a ‘home help’ for the elderly. 39-year-old single mother Katrin is looking for a job and simultaneously looking after her adolescent son Max. They have been close for many years, and during most evenings they can be found enjoying a bottle of wine - or two - watching the world go by from Nike’s balcony. But over the course of one hot summer, they find their bond of friendship wearing thin - most of the frictions caused by the arrival of truck-driver Ronald. It seems like life will now have to change.
