Winter 1944. Despite his desire to return to the front, injured Anochin is detached into a remote village, where a telegraph tower is to be build, his task being to provide food and shelter for German captives. The villagers first express their reluctance and even hatred, yet as the time passes, women whose husbands are at the front start appreciating help. The edges of conflicts wear out, life in all embracing poverty gains humane dimensions. Soon they realise, how cruel a regime decides over their lives.
